Deadly Ebola Outbreak Grips DR Congo Amid Rising Death Toll

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to a very rare strain called Bundibugyo, for which there is neither any vaccine nor a cure, is taking place at an alarming rate and will become the most lethal in all of history. The World Health Organization states that in the ongoing outbreak which began in February, but was officially declared in May, over 2,000 people have died out of 4,300 patients; the death toll is bound to rise to surpass that of the previous Ebola outbreak in West Africa where around 11,000 people perished in 2014-2016. Fighting against the virus is made difficult by the remoteness of the location, civil war in the region, ill-equipped hospitals, misinformation, and even doctors’ strikes.
